Victoria backpacker highlights

  • Melbourne: visit the famous Queen Victoria Markets, have a coffee on Lygon Street or take a stroll past Federation Square – Melbourne has some magnificent sights

  • Torquay: this surfing town is home of surfing brands Ripcurl and Quicksilver.  There is even a surfing museum with a wave tank, board-shaping demonstrations and surf history displays.  Bells Beach is only a couple of kilometers away.

  • Phillip Island: year round, people come to the Mornington Peninsula to watch the nightly Penguin Parade, when the local penguins emerge from the water to walk up to their nests on the beach.  The island is also home to the Australian 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix in October.

  • Mt Buller: Victoria’s largest ski resort is only three hours out of Melbourne.

  • Mildura: located next to the Murray River, Mildura attracts a lot of backpackers thanks to the amount of fruit-picking work available (mainly from January to March).
